Bernette Sewing Machine Fabric Does Not Feed Through

Oh, Halp! Fabric won't feed on my Bernina!

I recently bought a used Bernina 1005, Matilda. She was sewing along beautifully, and then suddenly, the fabric stopped feeding through. The feed dogs are still coming up and the presser foot is making contact with the feed dogs, but the fabric will not feed through. If I pull it through, it will stitch without bunching up. What have I done to my poor Bernina?!?!?

Is it possible your stitch length got set to zero by mistake?

Nope, it's not on 0. I tried changing the stitch length, but no luck.

Turn off the machine and see if it will reset. If not, try a scrap of fabric that has sewed just fine. If you have problems with that then I would find the dial that adjusts the pressure foot. On my Bernina, it is a dial on the left side of the machine.

Make sure that you have not set the machine to sew in reverse. On my Bernina there is a button you can hold down to sew in reverse but another button to touch on the screen that will cause it to sew in reverse without holding the temporary backstitch button. If you have the reverse button on by mistake it will not want to feed forward at all. Ask me how I know. :)

Is there some "stickum" of some kind on the fabric either side? Or maybe on the bottom of the foot? That's about the only thing that ever stopped my Bernina from feeding properly. Good luck.

Not sure if you have the same problem I had with my Viking Emerald but I had tried everything I could think of. The dealer/repair person said there was so much lint between the feed dogs that they couldn't move to pull the fabric through. She told me to look at the feed dogs from behind the machine because looking at them from the front side you would never know there was a problem. So once in while I plan to check mine.
Guess it proves that I use my machine!!! The machine is a year old but had worked on several minkee projects and flannel blankets so that probably was the culprit. Chris

Definitely check the back stitch. But also turning off the machine would reset something like that.

Also - if you haven't already done so, open it up and clean the lint out.

My 801 started making clicking noises with each stitch. Changing the needle and cleaning it out made all the difference and it is purring again.

I hope it is an easy fix for you.

Cheers, K
